Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will investigate a new concept for remote optical oxygen sensing. It will link conventional ideas for oxygen sensing using oxygen quenching of luminescence from lumophores with very recent progress in self assembled monolayer (SAM) film technology. The latter uses the evanescent wave emanating from the substrate, when used as a waveguide, to promote photoexcitation of molecules within the SAM assembly. The use of a SAM should overcome difficulties intrinsic to other media, notably slow oxygen diffusion. The programme will compare three different types of lumophore and will require synthesis of novel derivatives for SAM fabrication, SAM characterisation studies, luminescence detection and its quenching by oxygen gas.
