The study of high magnetic fields generated by ultra-intense laser interactions with solid density plasmas is significant, both from a basic physics perspective as well as for applications of ultra-intense lasers. The magnetic fields expected to be produced in the proposed experiments are comparable to those existing in exotic astrophysical phenomena such as white dwarf stars. Precise magnetic field measurements are needed to identify the important generation mechanisms. Through the use of innovative diagnostic techniques, it is proposed to observe the structure of magnetic fields with high spatial and temporal resolution, and thereby contribute to understanding the physics in this new regime, in particular with regard to the use of high intensity lasers for inertial confinement fusion experiments.
