Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is concerned with the development of a model based segmentation method for 3D image data such as that produced by medical body scanning techniques: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRE) and Computed Tomography (CT). The method aims to precisely identify anatomical structures of interest to generate accurate models for use in patient diagnosis, surgical planning and guidance, and for quantitation.Automated or semi-automated segmentation methods are needed because the large imaging data sizes make manual delineation of the structures of interest impractical. Also, the accuracy and reproducibility of manual segmentation is generally poor. The aim of this research is to develop a framework for feature analysis by extending other work in 2D feature segmentation that uniquely combines multiresolution methods, local structure modelling and Fourier domain estimation. The work will be undertaken in collaboration with King's College Medical School and King's College Hospital who will advise on the clinical aspects and provide appropriate patient data for experiment.
