Summary on Grant Application Form |
As railways increase in speed and capacity, they will help reduce the environmental burden caused by the growth in road transport. However, noise remains a major hindrance to the development of railways and to overcome this efficiently, increased fundamental understanding is required. Established theoretical models for wheel/rail noise, based on a linear model of the contact zone, are not valid for large amplitude irregularities on the wheel and rail surfaces, such as rail joints, dipped welds, points and crossings. These are a major source of additional noise in urban areas. The project will develop non-linear models of the wheel/rail interaction at audible frequencies for use in noise prediction. These models will be implemented in the time domain. Using these new models, it will be possible to predict the vibration and noise due to larger amplitude irregularities. This will allow the effect of low noise wheel and track designs to be evaluated for their effect on impact noise as well as rolling noise. Validation of the new theoretical models will be achieved through the use of an existing scale laboratory test rig and through the use of field data. This will allow the monitoring procedures to be refined.
