High field ESR and FMR spectrometers are currently being developed world-wide as the advantages of working at fields above 3 Tesla, rather than the conventional 1-2T, become apparent. The applications have developed a spectrometer working in the range 90-270 GHz with a 12T magnet and temperature range 2-300K. The fact that 2 copies of the design have been sold to the National Magnet Facility in Florida lends support to our claim that it has the best performance of any spectrometer available at present. The spectrometer is funded as the UK HFESR Facility by the Chemistry Committee of EPSRC and is therefore not available to FMR. We propose to build a modified version of the spectrometer, dedicated to FMR, using an existing 8T magnet and Variable Temperature Insert. The great advantages of HFFMR is that the analysis of the spectra is simplified because the high field ensures the alignment of the magnetisation. This has already been recognised by Hitachi (recording media) and European Laboratories (fine particles). The spectrometer can also measure Faraday rotation, a parameter of importance for many devices of interest to DERA.
