Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research is in the field of the analysis and bifurcations of piecewise linear (PWL) dynamical systems. These systems can be described by set of PWL ordinary differential equations and are widely used in Engineering to model a large varied of physical systems. We plan to study the occurrence in this class of systems of periodic solutions characterised by sliding sections, i.e. trajectories partially lying within the system discontinuity set. Specifically, we shall focus our attention on the bifurcations leading to the formation of these orbits and study the further transitions from these solutions to more complex dynamical behaviour such as deterministic chaos. As mentioned in the 'Objectives' we wish to apply our analytical results to physical models of relevance in applications such as relay feedback control systems and DC/DC power converters. We propose to work in strict collaboration with experimentalists and engineers interested in applications in the UK and abroad throughout the duration of the project.
