Measuring the extensional properties of mobile fluids is one of the outstanding experimental problems in non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, and one considered essential for determining the predictive power of constitutive equations for extensional flows (which are closely related to many important processing situations). In order to achieve the high strains and rates of extension pertinent to flows of engineering relevance we propose to develop a new experimental technique in which extensional flows are produced ab initio, by exploiting the dynamics of bubble collapse under shockwaves. The work proposed herein offers the prospect of obtaining extensional flow data at high strains and high rates of deformation while being relatively unpolluted by the shear history and elastic instabilities which plague most `conventional, techniques, such as filament stretching. This data will be used in the development of predictive tools for process simulation. This aspect of the work will exploit recent advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics to provide a time-accurate, viscoelastic simulation capability incorporating multiple relaxation times and the modelling of transient free-surfaces.
