Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal addresses all three areas identified as priorities for the Foresight LINK Awards by the Foresig Steering Group: a cleaner world; risk assessment and management in the workplace and the home; sensors and sensory information processing. There is a pressing need for detailed localised ozone monitoring at concentrations of interest to environmental and workplace health and safety applications. Regulation of workp air quality, where ozone is used for sterilisation and as an ambient air deodoriser, or is generated adventitiously by office equipment, is required by COSHH. Localised outdoor ground-level ozone monitoring is required throughout the EU. Present ozone monitoring equipment is very bulky, maintenance-intensive and extremely expensive. The project aims to exploit the discovery that W03 at elevated temperature is an excellent gas-sensitive resistor for 03 in the ambient atmosphere. The project aims to decrease the size and hence power consumption of the devices, and provide simple signal processing methods to make them exploitable in portable instruments. It also aims to improve understanding of response mechanisms to improve manufacturing repeatabil and increase further the reliability in use. Keywords describing areas of proposal._ Chemistry, Materials, Sensors
