Dr Hein would devote about half his time to the Physics microwave group working in close collaboration with Professor Gough, helping to develop a 100GHz measurements system for investigation of microwave properties of HTS and other interesting materials. He would also take part in ongoing microwave programmes, with a special emphasis on measurements below 4.2K. These would include investigations of the affect of the AF magnetic transition on excitations in the superconducting state in 123-GdBaCuO, and a new microwave programme on superconducting ruthenates, which have recently been confirmed as p-wave superconductors involving pairing on only one of the fermi surface sheets. The other half of his time would be spent in Electrical Engineering with Dr Adrian Porch developing new techniques for investigating and monitoring non-linear microwave power dependencies in thin films and practical devices. Such measurements would be based on the observation of intermodulation products and transient response techniques that have already been developed at Wuppertal in Dr Hein's group led by Professor Piel. An attempt will be made to correlate observed nonlinearity with microstructural defects identified by magneto-optic microscopy, electron beam modulation of IV characteristics and SEM with resolutions, approx 5 microns or less, in collaboration with Professor Stuart Abell, Metallurgy and Materials.
