Concern over depletion of the ozone layer has stimulated research interest in the development of absorption chiller/heat pump systems. Absorption systems are attractive because they use natural refrigerants such as water and can be driven by natural gas, waste heat or solar energy. However, conventional absorption systems have a low coefficient of performance (COP) and high capital cost. In addition, they use refrigerant/absorbent solutions such as water/lithium bormide which are corrosive to metals and expensive to purchase. Concentrated lithium bromide solutions have a relatively high crystallisation temperature and can solidify or freeze inside the chiller. Due to poor heat and mass transfer in the absorber and generator units, conventional absorption systems are physically bulky. These disadvantages have presented the widespread use of conventional absorption systems.What is needed, in order to complete with conventional vapour-compression systems, is an absorption unit with markedly higher COP which is also compact and cost effective. The proposed Proof of Concept project aims to investigate a novel centrifugal chiller/heat pump system which should meet these requirements.
