The activation (fission) of carbon-fluorine bonds, which are amongst the strongest known and have previously been considered unreactive, is being achieved with increasing regularity. A number of organometallic complexes are capable of activating these strong bonds under mild conditions and with a high degree of selectivity. If C-F bond activation can be coupled with C-C bond formation then a powerful new synthetic methodology can be developed. The proposed project aims to explore and develop the synthetic utility of C-F bond activation in the syntheses of organometallic complexes comprising hydrocarbon-phosphine hybrid ligands. The ability of this process to induce chirality at the metal centre will be investigated. Due to the enhanced rigidity provided by the hybrid ligand, these complexes will display regio- and stereo-control over reactions at the metal centres. Thus, these complexes are envisaged to be important reagents for asymmetric syntheses and catalysis. The project will deliver a new synthetic methodology and new organometallic complexes displaying enhanced control over the reactivity of the metal centre.
