This multi-project equipment proposal brings together principal fluids research groups at Heriot-Watt and Cambridge Universities. We wish to establish high resolution and fully digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) flow imaging systems, one for each institution, to be used for projects at each University. Currently DPIV facilities are the domain of Physics Departments, and are little used in Chemical Engineering Departments in UK. We believe that the time is now ripe to bridge the gap between Science and Engineering disciplines and take advantage of advanced measurement technologies. We are in an ideal position to do this, as one of the applicants (Dr Ni) has a strong historial link and still collaborates actively with the Department of Physics at Edinburgh University. The DPIV facilities at Cambridge and Heriot-Watt would give us the edge to enhance our research standing both nationally and internationally, and there will be the added benefit of ensuring a dynamic collaboration between the research groups, as well as the two institutions. The overall objectives of this proposal are to obtain generic and quantitative information concerning fluid mechanics in spatially and temporally complex flows using DPIV technique and to develop fundamental models based on the quantitative data obtained
