We propose to design and develop the High Grade Continuous Centrifuge (HGCC). The new machine will offer many advantages over existing batch and continuous machines, including a radical simplification in overall factory layout, lowered overall processing cost, and a cleaner factory environment. A HGCC machine will be developed for the Sugar Industry (British Sugar and Tate and Lyle), and later for the Food Industry (Cerestar Dextrose Division) and the Bulk Chemicals Industry (ICI). Fundamental scientific advances are needed in the constitutive modelling of powder deformation, in the modelling of friction at the interface between a powder and the machine basket, in the mathematical modelling of paste flow, and in optimal machine and process design. The detailed specification and ideal operating environment of the machine will be co-ordinated by British Sugar (BS), the machine design will be addressed by Thomas Broadbent and Sons Limited (TBS) and the scientific investigation will be performed by the Cambridge University Engineering Department. Overall, the project will be led by TBS.
