Summary on Grant Application Form
The two principle objectives outlined above will be met as follows. Firstly, the next level of sophistication in our surface studies is closely tied to instrumental refinements. Applications of these new instruments include studies of the dynamics of bond making and breaking processes, both in real time using pulse-probe femtosecond laser spectroscopy and in the frequency domain using4 K FTIR emission spectroscopy. The dynamics of individual molecular and atomic motion and reactivity will be studied by laser-pulsed 4 K FTIR emission spectroscopy. The dynamics of individual molecular and atomic motion and reactivity will be studied by laser-pulsed 4 K STM. The range of structures which can be crystallographically determined will be extended using our new fibre-optic LEED system. Secondly, more complex adsorption and surface reactivity processes will be studied using a close working relationship between state-of-the-art DFT calculations coupled to a range of experimental techniques. The plan is to co-ordinate these activities by focusing on a small group of important catalytic processes, particularly methane partial oxidation, but, also methanol synthesis, and CO insertion and NO synthesis and decomposition reactions.
