|
This project addresses the development of next generation distributed information management systems that naturally support co-operative work practices and which operate in a seamless manner in an underlying heterogeneous environment. The project is motivated by the natural convergence of two distinct trends of previous research at Lancaster: the ethnographically informed development of co-operative applications for large-scale organisations, and the use of reflection in distributed systems infrastructures. The project will investigate the role of reflection in providing dynamic and flexible support for the evolution of distributed information management systems in a co-operative context, with emphasis on the support provided by reflection for change management. The dynamic nature of information management will be a central issue in the research as explicit support for evolution is becoming a crucial requirement of future systems. More specifically, the research will have a strong applications focus and will build on empirical studies of a real world organisation. In particular, the development of the reflective models will be driven by ethnographic studies in NatWest Bank. Furthermore, the concepts will be validated through the development of a proof-of-concept Groupware application, derived from the above studies that will be assesed within the Bank.
