Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research programme aims in developing a time-frequency domain filtering technique to process automatically biomechanical data. Many of the current time-domain or frequency-domain filtering methods work satisfactorily in cases the raw data are assumed to be stationary. However this assumption is not valid for many biomechanical experiments. For example events such as heel strike in walking gait analysis and impacts in sports are not stationary.Recent work by the applicants indicates that there is strong evidence that time-frequency filtering provides better results than conventional filtering in either the time or the frequency domain. Further investigation is needed, since the recent results are based on filtering using just one (fixed) filtering function. The main thrust of the proposed project is to develop an automatic time-frequency filtering technique, which will provide adaptive, fast and efficient filtering of large amounts of nonstationary biomechanical data.
