Trends in the integrated circuit market towards systems on silicon is generating demands for mixed signal functionality, virtual components and the use of bare die for multi-chip package applications. Achieving realistic manufacturing costs for products based on this technology will require test strategies that can cope with the complexity and performance levels expected, satisfy customer demands for access to test functions and guarantee the quality levels required by the market. One of the major obstacles to the realisation of this technology is testing the mixed signal functions predicted to be inherent in most next generation products.ATOM will target this area by investigating and developing new techniques for building test support into deep sub-micron mixed signal and analogue functions. The work will provide a formal approach to test program optimisation, will reduce the need for high speed or high accuracy external analogue test stimuli and response capture and will realise built-in-self-test for key mixed signal and analogue functions. The technology will be of strategic importance to the UK microelectronics base in the context of both cost and quality targets, especially for growth areas such as automotive and process control where aerospace quality is required at mass market prices.
