Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main research topic in this project is to investigate how virtual reality and object oriented programming could be used to create realistic models of structures, in order to replace structural design calculations with measurement of responses such as forces and displacements in a virtual reality model. The virtual reality model will consist of generic object oriented components from a limited number of standard structures. These generic components will then be joined together to create object oriented, bottom-up model of simple structures. Simple measurement of forces will be used instead of conventional structural calculations. One of the aims of the project is to produce an analogue model of a structure within a digital environment ; eg of a multi-storey building or a bridge consisting of a number of simple structural components. Dynamic review of the structure will then be implemented to answer what-if questions and late changes in the design. The possibility of collaborative design over the internet would also be investigated. Lastly, with the collaboration of our industrial partners, the implications of this virtual reality model on the Civil Engineering profession and the culture of structural design will be investigated and reviewed.
