Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal examines the dynamic response of thin-walled sections which are struck axially by masses producing large inelastic deformations. A study will be made of the material, geometrical and loading characteristics which cause transitions from a dynamic progressive buckling response, which is an efficient mode for absorbing energy in the field of structural crashworthiness, for example, to global bending behaviour or to a dynamic plastic buckling mode, both of which are less efficient at absorbing impact energies.Axial impact tests will be conducted on 'thin', 'intermediate' and 'thick' circular and square tubes having a range of axial lengths and struck by masses travelling up to 100 m/s. The tubes will be made from an aluminium alloy to eliminate the influence of material strain rate sensitivity. Other tests will be undertaken on intermediate tubes made from mild and high strength steels to study the influence of material strain rate sensitivity and other material properties.Theoretical analyses will study the influence of axial elastic-plastic wave propagation on the dynamic progressive and dynamic plastic buckling behaviour of circular tubes and the influence of transverse inertia on. the transition to global bending of square section tubes.
