This proposal concerns the study of the fundamental science underlying the use of a supercritical carbon dioxide spray coating process as an environmentally friendly approach to applying dispersion coatings. The project will focus on the effect of a number of parameters (chemical, temperature, pressure etc.) on the nature of the incipient spray. A soluble coating system will be studied initially for comparison with the dispersion systems. A variety of block and graft copolymers (e.g. methacrylate-siloxane) will be synthesised as dispersion stabilisers using radical and group transfer polymerisation techniques and the resultant polymers characterised fully. The stabilisers will be assessed for their ability to redisperse preformed polymer powders (synthesised by non-aqueous dispersion polymerisation) using a view cell. The distribution of the stabilisers will b evaluated in the spray coating process, where the nature of the spray will be studied using high speed imaging to determine the particle size and size distribution. The recycle loop and the spray head of the apparatus will be instrumented to allow the rheological characteristics of the spray medium to be determined. The relationship of structural and processing parameters to spray characteristics will be established.
