Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme of work on analytical and chemical processing microsystems will allow the wider application of specific expertise and facilities at Cardiff University Laboratory for Applied Microsystems to interface in a more collaborative manner with complementary skills expertise and facilities at other institutes and companies in other fields (e.g. chemical engineering). A cohesive multidisciplinary industrial-academic virtual facility will be formed which otherwise would not exist to the detriment to UK academic industry. In particular, participation within the consortium will allow focus on Cardiff (sponsored by EPSRC/RAEng), on clean technology implementation for sustainable production processes, to be encouraged and developed within a wider sphere of expertise and industrial influence. The specific programme of work at Cardiff is focused on three critical technical hurdles which currently hinder the development and industrial exploitation of Lab-on-a-Chip technology. These include (I) interfacing with the real-world , (ii) processing of real (dirty) matrices, and (iii) systems integration. Agile micromanufacturing processes (particularly rapid prototyping) and the use of materials compatible with industrial production by SMEs will receive particular attention.
