Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to provide a correction to low frequency laboratory measurement of sound reduction index to give the sound level difference between dwellings when separated by the wall or floor in question. The correction will be for the frequency range 40-200 Hz and will complement existing standard procedures for the range 100-3150 Hz.The present diffuse field correction to the sound reduction index, which gives the level difference, will be replaced by one which is a function of the low frequency characteristics of the separated rooms as well as of the wall/floor, or by a statistical estimate of the level difference between rooms with dimensions representative of dwellings in the UK.The approach proposed involves a relatively inexpensive experimentally validated FEM modelling package and precludes the need for an expensive field measurement survey. It also will allow the effects of low frequency room absorption and flanking transmission to be included.
