Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary aim of the programme is to supply high quality samples of metallic elements, alloys and compounds, where necessary in single crystal form, for use in metal physics research. We specialise in the provision of materials that cannot be obtained from commercial sources, while we are one of the few UK laboratories authorised to work with the radioactive metals uranium and thorium. By continuing to supply samples to around twenty EPSRC-supported groups at universities and research institutions (many of whom are entirely dependent upon us for all their needs) we intend to support their world class researches into magnetism (both fundamental and applied), fermiology, metal surfaces, superconductivity etc. We propose to back-up he supply of samples by researching into the preparation, purification, crystal growth and characterisation of metallic materials; in particular, we aim to broaden our successful purification work on metallic elements to include methods of preparing high purity crystals of intermetallic compounds. We also plan to set up a comprehensive data base covering constitutional, preparation and crystal growth information for metallic materials, which, we believe, will be of benefit to several groups when planning their research programmes.
