Conventional linear filter design is based on the principle that energy in unweanted frequency bands is attenuated. The traditional low pass and band pass filters are examples of this approach. The objective of this research study is to propose a totally new approach to this problem which employs recent theoretical developments by the authors based on the narmax model and estimation in the frequency domain. The new approach is based on the principle that energy in unwanted frequency bands can be moved or transferred to other frequency locations. This is achieved by designing a new class of nonlinear filters where the fundamental concept is not to attenuate but to move unwanted effects to other frequency locations. The design of nonlinear filters that can transfer energy is a fundamentally new and important concept which could have a major influence on nonlinear analysis, synthesis and design.
