Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal centres in set theory and its connection with other fields of mathematics, e.g. model theory and Banach spaces. There has recently been a lot of interest in the subject, and some remarkable results, for example those of Gowers. The proposer has expertise in the subject, and is now proposing to consider some hard open questions. The intended RA is Dr Farah M. Dzamonja and I. Farah come from two different schools of set theory, and collaboration is likely to produce results which would combine the powerful methods of each. The particular problems which interest us are various variants of Maharam Problem, distortability of the Tsirelson's space, universality problem for Benach spaces and uniform Eberlein compacta, and further problems in pure set theory and their connections with model theory. The tools we intend to use are infinite Ramsey theory, forcing and pcf. The proposal is likely to benefit from the presence at UEA of a model theorist, Dr. David Evans.
