Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work will use modern spectroscopic techniques to investigate previously unseen transient molecules and previously unseen or unanalysed electronic states of known molecules. The techniques used include two colour ionisation spectroscopy which provides an unambiguous identification of the carrier of the observed spectra (important for new molecules) and cavity ring down spectroscopy, which extends the range of molecules that can be studied. The study will concentrate on carbon containing radicals, which are important in several areas, including the chemistry of combustion processes, soot formation and molecules in space. This work will provide the spectra needed to monitor these species in these and other environments. It will also provide a detailed understanding of the electronic structure and bonding of these molecules, many of which show unusual features.
