In this work it is proposed to examine the physical mechanisms present in an extension of a classical problem in fluid dynamics, namely the spin-up readjustment of a rotating fluid in a circular cylinder when the rotational symmetry of the boundary layer on the horizontal base is broken. In a previous sequence of preliminary experiments it was noted that the introduction of a small (relative to the fluid depth) non-axisymmetric bump onto the horizontal lower boundary resulted in a significant decrease in the time taken for the flow to readjust to a new rotation rate (by as much as a factor of seven in some cases). A thorough analytical/numerical approach to the problem will assess the key physical mechanisms, whilst the laboratory data will provide qualitative and quantitative data on the unsteady global flow field to compare with the theoretical predictions. A detailed laboratory component will assess the sensitivity of the readjustment to the exact size, shape and symmetry of the topography.
