Groundwater pollution plumes are often composed of degradable compounds and so are candidates for natural attenuation. However, there are cases where the plume degrades too slowly, due to the slowness of transverse dispersion, a lack of electron acceptors, and the toxicity of high pollutant concentrations. These problems could be rectified by hydraulic manipulation which could speed mixing and dilution and introduce extra electron acceptors. The proposal is for a feasibility study of this concept using numerical models and based on field data for a complex, slowly degrading plume that we are currently studying under a WPM grant. We would investigate manipulations that only required the pumping of clean water, and which had fail-safe control of the plume position. If a positive result is obtained, we would submit a proposal for a full, 3 year, field-based study.
