Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will extend facilities for the design of multimedia distributed systems, to ensure that they can effectively meet the needs of complex systems which will include the use of stream communication, multicasting and Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. To achieve this we will augment UML to produce a design environment with descriptions in sufficiently precise notations to enable assessments of designs to be made based on fitness for purpose, performance and functionality. Building on our existing work and experience, we will describe a set of modelling tools to provide such an environment, which focus on some of the key issues in the design of distributed multimedia systems. This will involve the specialisation and extension of existing UML notations to produce frameworks which are both abstract and precise. The resultant precise specifications will enable the system designed to be evaluated in advance of implementation for consistency, performance and QoS provision, either by modelling experts or by automated tools. Throughout the project, we will check our approach using case studies.
