Summary on Grant Application Form |
Planning technology emanating from artificial intelligence research is beginning to be exploited in important real-world applications. However serious methodological problems remain to be overcome. This project will investigate the production of knowledge-based planning systems that are theoretically sound, exploit domain knowledge in order to avoid inherent combinatorial problems, and deal with issues involving plan execution as well as plan generation. Our approach is based on the independent development and validation of planning domain models and planning methods. We plan to develop rich representation languages resulting from our previous research for the encoding of planning entities within the domain model, and develop a 'meta tool' approach to planner production which involves compilation of a planner specification and domain model into an efficient application.Using this approach, the features of domain models that characterise the optimum planning method will be investigated. The overall method will be developed and evaluated using three substantial application domains taken from the proposers' previous work.
