With increasing costs for water treatment and distribution and growing environmental concern, the water companies are under mounting pressure to find ways to reduce water losses, and specifically to achieve and maintain an economically optimum level of leakage.The proposed research programme will develop a model for leakage detection, quantification and calibration based on the method of unsteady inverse analysis. The key item in the proposed approach is to initiate some transient event, measure the response, and then interpret the results by calculating the parameters of interest using the inverse method.The programme will set up both laboratory and full-scale facilities for carrying out experiments, in which a sufficient amount of reliable data would be collected, tested and verified for the application of the inverse calculations. The relevant software package will be developed for hydrodynamic simulations in the interpretation of the system's response. Both steady-state and transient network analysis will be used in conjunction with genetic algorithm optimisation. By relying on preferential selection and population genetics the GA will evolve the best set of pressure measurement points required for the overall network evaluation.The project will attempt a full-scale application of the proposed methodology.
