The reclamation of contaminated sites presents a serious problem throughout the industrialised world. Before 'brownfield' sites can be redeveloped, the extent and nature of the contamination must be determined. This is usually carried out using geochemical sampling, trial pits and boreholes, but such invasive techniques may be hazardous if volatile compounds are present or if drilling opens up new flow-paths. Also, Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPLs), such as oils and solvents, occur at concentrations which are below the detection limit of traditional geophysical techniques. Recent research shows that Spectral Induced Polarisation (SIP) has the potential to detect and image NAPL distributions in the near surface and to differentiate one contaminant species from another. The project aims to develop a low cost SIP instrument; new survey techniques suitable for the built environment (eg: cross-hole scanning), and cost-effective interpretation software. The field prototype (hardware and software) will be tested at controlled sites to calibrate the prototype system against known contaminant models and ground-truth.
