Summary on Grant Application Form |
A crucial goal for cognitive science is to understand how people represent space. It is commonly assumed that with experience a person develops a 'cognitive map' of an environment through which they travel. Whilst an essential property of cognitive maps is that they support distance and direction estimates, it is also known that in some circumstances, judgements about space indicate a more topological representation. There is evidence, for example, that people group randomly positioned objects into clusters. In topological representation the organisation of, and relationships between objects is more important than their Euclidean position. The aim of the research proposed here will be to investigate the issue of Euclidean versus topological encodings for a range of virtual environments. The results will inform theoretical and applied research.
