Funding is requested to build a world class experimental facility for the on-line monitoring, model formulation and process control of continuous fluidized bed systems for physical and (bio-) chemical processing. Fluidized beds are used in a variety of industries, ranging from coal combustion and steelmaking to bioreactors for bioactive products manufacture and pollution control processes. The overall objective within this 3 year programme of this research is to elucidate the mechanisms by which particles interact with each other and with the fluid in fluidized bed reactors. The work will involve the formulation of a new theoretical model based on the agglomeration and mixing mechanism of particles in cohesive and semi-cohesive fluidized bed reactors. The model is to be tested experimentally using naturally cohesive particles, as well as those rendered cohesive by the addition of volatile and/or non-volatile liquid coatings. The experimental programme will involve state-of-the-art electrical capacitance tomography sensors and analysis equipment. The outcome of this programme of work is to define the generic control parameters which affect fluidization quality and thus are of vital important to the effectiveness of fluidized bed reactors.
