Summary on Grant Application Form
The magnetic field patterns of physical structures will be mapped in three dimensions using a non-contact shear force microscope (ShFM), and employing an original and innovative orthogonal, twin-beam reflection method to detect and control the oscillation of the probe. This technique will have significant advantages over existing practical magnetic force microscopy (MFM) methods, principally in its avoidance of sample contact and damage to the magnetic structures and it's 3-dimensional mapping capability. The motion detection system at the heart of this new scanning probe microscope will have wider applications in other fields of surface science.
