Summary on Grant Application Form |
1. To use high-pressure high-temperature IR spectroscopy to investigate the mechanisms of two catalytic C-C bond forming reactions resulting from aromatic C-H bond activation by ruthenium carbonyl complexes.2. To determine key parameters in each catalytic cycle, specifically i) the identity and structure of the active catalytic intermediates; ii) the role of functional group participation (ketone, imine co-ordination) in determining the regiospecificity of the reactions; iii) kinetic and equilibrium data for component steps in the reactions.3. To combine these experimental findings with those from alternative catalyst precursors to suggest improvements that will allow the reactions to be performed under milder conditions and with an extended range of substrates (alkenes with electron withdrawing groups etc).
