This project will investigate use of controlling and sensing devices for adaptive laser ultrasonic systems. To this end a non-contacting surface wave acoustic microscope will be used to develop the two novel aspects of the technology. These are an all-optical surface acoustic wave wavefront sensor; this will measure the local wavefronts in a small region of the sample. The second element is a programmable spatial light modulator which controls the optical illumination on the sample surface, thus providing control of the resulting ultrasonic distributions. Initially these two key elements will be tested independently, the wavefront sensor will be used with fixed illumination optics in a rapid non-contacting acoustic imaging system and the spatial light modulator, which in this case will be a digital mirror device, will be incorporated in a novel non-contacting surface wave measurement system, both these systems will use feedback between the sensing system and the illumination optics.In the latter satge of the project the wavefront sensor and wavefront controller will be combined in the non-contacting acoustic microscope, where in this case corrections to the emitted beam profile will be controlled with the spatial light modular.
