Summary on Grant Application Form |
Are research assistant will modify a large calibration chamber and carry out instrumented model pile rapid load tests in clay beds over a range of frequencies and wave forms. A research student funded by TNO and Berminghammer will carry out triaxial shear tests on the same clay at different rates and develop soil modelling algorithms for a one-dimensional stress wave programme to improve the simulation of the static load deflection behaviour from rapid load test data. The research assistant will plan and PMC will carry out a Statnamic test on an instrumented frictional pile already installed at the EPSRC Bothkennar Soft Clay site. Using the modified simulation a class A prediction of the static load deformation behaviour will be attempted. This will be verified by a subsequent maintained load static test. A borehole will be sunk close to the pile and soil carefully sampled for later laboratory testing to examine the influence of rate effects on the undrained shear strength and shear modulus.A database of test data along with site investigation information from a large number of sites will be established with the aim of analysing these using the modified soil model and simulation programme.
