Summary on Grant Application Form |
Although supercritical carbon dioxide has been put forward as one of the most attractive alternatives to hazardous and/or environmentally unacceptable organic solvents for industrial processes, the number of actual applications in catalysis, in particular, is still relatively few. This arises from the virtual insolubility of conventional metal catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide. We, and others, have shown that by attaching long perfluoroalkyl units to ligands, catalytically active metal complexes can be dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide and high levels of catalytic activity can be achieved. Here, we seek to extend this approach to supercritical carbon dioxide-soluble chiral metal complexes for asymmetric synthesis. The target ligands, perfluoroalkyl-derivatised analogues of BINAP and BINAPHOS, will be prepared by the development of established synthetic procedures. We intend to use these ligands for ruthenium and rhodium-catalysed hydrogenations and hydroformylations of a series of model, prochiral, substrates to establish the efficacy of the process. Furthermore, we intend to show that 100% recovery and recycle of these metal catalysts can be achieved via either supercritical or fluorous extraction procedures.
