Summary on Grant Application Form |
The director structures found in twisted liquid crystal cells when cooled into the S phase are fascinating. The S phase prohibits twist and hence it would seem at first to be excluded from a highly twisted cell. Conversely if the S phase forms it may be very defective. Experimental results show that this is not true - the S phase forms in the centre of the cell retaining thin regions near the cell wall which are nematic - like. The theory for this needs to be fully developed and hopefully extended to the twisted S * cell also.
