We have shown, in two pilot studies, that 4-electrode electrical impedance spectroscopy measurements can separate normal from pre-cancerous tissue in both the esophagus and the cervix. This application concentrates on understanding and optimising the technique in relation to Barrett's Esophagus, but the results will be equally applicable to the case of cervical screening. Barrett's Esophagus is a pre-malignant change in the esophageal mucosa, which carries an increased relative risk (x10 to x50) pf developing adenocarcinoma. This application concentrates on impedance measurements on excised tissue, obtaining information on tissue structure, modelling of the tissue impedance based on the measured structure, and comparison of the predictions from modelling with the measured data. The deliverable area 1) a robust 3-d tissue model; 2) a design for a clinically-usable probe; and 3) an optimised screening protocol.
