Summary on Grant Application Form
This research project will introduce into routine planning and monitoring of conformal radiotherapy the use of key 3D medical imaging modalities that provide functional information and improved contrast compared with x-ray computed tomography: single photon emission computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The images will be used to determine the planning target volume for treating a variety of cancers. Stratified into cancer types we shall investigate whether the planning target volume differs from one modality to another and quantify functional information and quantify the difference. We shall link in this work with our well established programme of optimising the physical basis of 3D conformal radiotherapy. Specifically we shall quantify in terms of tcp, ntcp and dose-volume data, the error which would be made if conformal therapy were based on one modality, whereas the target volume determined from a second modality may be different. We shall optimise the physical imaging modalities for this purpose.
