The programme of research is aimed at developing generic strategies and methods for reliability-based structural integrity assessment which can be used to assess existing plant, equipment and structures. Of particular importance is the need to develop methods which can be used in situations where the consequences of loss of structural integrity are severe, or where the costs of carrying out unnecessary repairs or strengthening is very high, in order to reduce potential losses.An important aspect of the research will be to develop improved models for the spatial variability of material properties which are compatible with existing methods of structural system reliability analysis and which will allow the inclusion of structure specific data obtained from both destructive and non-destructive tests. The research will also focus on the development of reliability up-dating techniques which will allow various direct and indirect sources of information to be used to reduce the variance in the predictions of failure loads and fatigue lives.The main areas of application to be studied are ageing offshore jacket structures and pressure vessels.
