Summary on Grant Application Form |
The experimental study will use an existing facility, a single cylinder Ricardo Hydra gasoline engine based upon a General Motors two litre power unit. The engine is dedicated to tribological research studies, is well equipped and in particular has a swinging arm dynamometer/load cell combination which permits measurement of the brake torque when firing and the frictional torque when the dynamometer is used to motor the engine.Valve train friction will be determined using a recently developed technique involving strain gauging of the drive pulleys of the twin overhead camshafts, whilst piston assembly friction will be assessed by the IMEP technique involving strain gauging of the connecting rod. Main and big-end bearing friction will be deduced indirectly from the other measurements.A novel and recently developed approach to monitor piston ring and cylinder liner wear will be adopted with particular attention paid to the effect of such areas on friction during running in.The experimental data will be used to validate two state-of-the-art software ;packages developed at Leeds for prediction of engine friction and piston ring wear.
