This is a proposal for a multi-departmental, interdisciplinary project between City, Cranfield and Kent Universities. It involves physicists, civil, electrical, mechanical, materials engineers and IT-specialists to exploit optical fibre sensor technology for structural integrity monitoring of civil engineering structures and structural components. This current consortium was formed at the request of the Structural Integrity steering panel of the EPSRC. This proposal represents the fusion of four individual proposals which were submitted for the preliminary round. The primary aim of this project is the application of a compact and effective, optical fibre-based instrumentation to determine the Structural Integrity of materials of construction such that risk assessment methodologies may be developed for complete structures. The realisation of the proposed technology will permit real-time and in situ assessment of the structural integrity of civil engineering structures such as bridges, dams, structures in earthquake zones and other hazardous environments which by virtue of their location or function require regular monitoring and assessment. This current proposal follows closely the remit of the EPSRC Programme Landscapes document (1998/9) for General Engineering, which explicitly encourages applications of this type which are multidisciplinary, involving modelling and simulation coupled with experimental measurement.
