Summary on Grant Application Form |
The study will be carried out in four overlapping phases.1. Development of conceptual solutions for construction systems which simplify FRP fabrication for identified ship types, taking account of hydrodynamic and structural performance requirements; identification of jointing options for these solutions; development of a systematic strategy for the selection and assessment of these solutions.2. Theoretical investigation of: achievable geometric shapes in the context of desired hull forms; the impact of these shapes on the hydrodynamic performance; structural performance of joints including ultimate strength, impact resistance and fatigue/fracture behaviour. Identification of material characterisation parameters and test methods.3. Experimental validation of: predicted structural performance of system joints, including in-plane and out-of-plane connections; predicted hydrodynamic performance of achievable hull form geometries.4. Techno-Economic Evaluation: Generation of guidelines and design tools for direct use in ship design using preformed FRP components; use of developed tools to generate illustrative designs based on realistic specifications; evaluation of designs in the context of component manufacture, ease of fabrication, and life-cycle cost.
