Summary on Grant Application Form |
We seek support for the purchase of a diffractometer with a charge coupled device (CCD) detector and an associated low temperature device. The high sensitivity of the CCD will allow us to determine structures which are impossible using a traditional four-circle diffractometer but which are essential for the success of a wide range of projects in inorganic and organic chemistry. These projects comprise a major research effort in the School and cover wide areas of interest including supramolecular chemistry, liquid crystals, complex natural product synthesis, clean technology, metal ion recognition, extraction and transport, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, chiral synthesis, biomimetic chemistry, solid state and materials chemistry. We seek support for a PDRA which is vital to the efficient running and productivity of the proposed X-ray facility. We are keenly aware that the potential data collection capacity of a modern CCD instrument is such that the structure solution becomes the rate-determining step. The provision of a PDRA will enable rapid structure solution analysis and publication of results.
