Summary on Grant Application Form
Heterojunctions between semiconducting polymers are central to the operation of both light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photovoltaic diodes. These are achieved both by multilayer fabrication and by forming phase-separated polymer mixtures 9distributed heterojunctions). Detailed information about device operation requires direct measurements of local electric field distributions in each of the several materials present. This will be obtained thorough measurement of electric filed modulation of optical adsorption, as a function of bias voltage. In combination with structural measurements, this will be used to establish the nature of phase separation (e.g. at electrode interfaces) in heterojuncton devices.
