Loughborough University has been actively pursuing sports engineering research for over a decade and the existing laboratory facilities have been established principally with industrial contributions. The unique combination of research excellence in both sports science and engineering makes Loughborough the ideal location for a Sports Engineering Laboratory and this proposal sets out a case for support to enhance the existing provision and establish a state-of-the-art Sports Engineering facility - the SESAME laboratory.Loughborough's Sports Engineering Research Group's growth and substantial project income underlines the demand from the industry and the timeliness of this application. Many UK sports equipment manufacturers are SMEs who often cannot make the investment required for appropriate research facilities of their own. The SESAME Laboratory, guided by its Advisory Committee, will offer these organisations and the various sports governing bodies the opportunity to maintain a competitive edge. Traditionally sports equipment manufacturers have not taken full advantage of scientific research, but in an increasingly competitive global market they can no longer tolerate this situation and expect to survive.
