Summary on Grant Application Form |
In a scale model of the Grangemouth polymer pyrolysis reactor, a number of different fluidising gas distributor designs will be investigated to find the one best suited to produce the bed conditions (upward at the centre, downward at the wall solid circulation) best adapted for the pyrolysis reaction. The techniques of study used will include visual observation of bubble frequency distribution, solid tracer time migration/tomography and thermister film heat transfer coefficient probes. The results will be compared with the operation of the pilot plant reactor itself as revealed by bubble distribution on the bed surface, results from a BP heat transfer probe during cold operation and wall heat transfer co-efficients measured during normal operation. The model studies will be carried out both using an unobstructed fluidised bed and one fitted with models of the internal heat transfer surfaces necessary for the full-scale polymer pyrolysis process. These results will be used to draw conclusions as to the best design methods and parameters to be used in the selection of distributor plates for fluidised bed reactors to be used under similar conditions: low fluidising velocity and potentially agglomerating solid reactants.
